FA Cup 3rd Round - Swindon Town v Wigan Athletic - 7th January 2011

December 25, 2011

Reviewing Wigan's History within FA Cup Tournament brings their best effort having come in 1986/87 when they reached the quarter-finals. They did come close to success in the League Cup in 2005/06 when they defeated Arsenal in the semi-finals before losing to Manchester United 4-0 in the final at Wembley.

Wigan are currently struggling near the foot of the Premier League. Having gone through a run of eight consecutive defeats earlier in the year, they have recently been showing the sort of fighting spirit that has helped them to avoid relegation in the last couple of seasons. A thrilling 3-3 draw with fellow-strugglers Blackburn was followed by a 2-1 win at Sunderland. A heavy defeat at Arsenal was quickly put behind them when they won 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion before holding Chelsea and Liverpool to draws at DW Stadium.

Manager Roberto Martinez clearly has the support of his players and the F A Cup may offer some welcome relief from the weekly pressure of Premiership football. The draw for the third round has given them a tricky looking away tie at League 2 side Swindon Town who have defeated Huddersfield and Colchester to reach this stage. Although three divisions below the Latics, they are currently pressing for promotion and have only been defeated once at home this season. The magic of the FA Cup will make this a special occasion for their fans, especially having drawn a side from the Premiership.

One problem for Martinez is that the FA Cup gets underway on 7th January, immediately after a hectic Christmas and New Year period during which his team play four vital league matches. He may be forced to rest some of his star players for the trip to Swindon as Premiership survival is the main priority. Never the less, the FA Cup is still the oldest association football competition in the world and holds a special place in the hearts and minds of football supporters everywhere. If you think Wigan can overcome their League 2 opposition and move into the fourth round draw, why not invest in their progress in the FA Cup this year through Ticket2final.com.
