Barcelona storm to Copa del Rey semi-finals

February 18, 2012

Barça Regal was in superb form as they stormed through to the semi-finals of the King’s Cup by defeating Lucentum Alicante 75-54. Lorbek and Rabaseda, with 17 and 16 points respectively, were the highest point scorers of the match at Palau Sant Jordi as the hosts set about their task of winning a third consecutive Copa del Rey.

Lucentum stayed on level terms in the first quarter but Barça soon moved up a gear with Rabaseda, Navarro and Sada outstanding on offence. Xavi Rabaseda, making his King’s Cup debut, put the pressure on the Alicante team by sinking three triples in a row. Barça’s defence, led by an intimidating Vazquez, was also on top form as they dominated the second quarter 24-12 to move 41-25 clear.

The Catalan defending champions got better and better and, after four minutes of the second half, they quickly moved 53-27 ahead. Xavi Pascual rotated his men off the bench to avoid fatigue and a fantastic play from Rabaseda took them to 62-35 by the end of the third quarter.

The visitors battled hard but had no real answers to Barcelona and the champions eventually ran out comfortable 75-54 winners. In the other quarter-final Caja Laboral defeated Lagun Aro 72-65 and will be Barça’s semi-final opponents. Caja Laboral is one of the biggest teams in the competition and defeated Lagun Aro GBC after fighting back twice in the last two quarters. They have a proud Cup history, winners in 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2008 and twice runners-up.  The team is managed by Dusko Ivanovic, who has four Cups in this personal trophy cabinet and is attempting to equal Aíto García Reneses with a fifth.

The manager of Barça Regal, Xavi Pascual, and the team captain, Juan Carlos Navarro, called on the Azulgrana fans to give maximum support to the Catalan side in semi-final to carry them through to the final. They know they will need all the support they can get if they are to pull off a third consecutive victory that will also put them ahead in the all-time history of the Copa del Rey with a record 23 victories.
